The Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner is seeking expressions of interest from Tasmanians who may be interested in adopting a retired racing greyhound.
In August 2025, the Government announced that greyhound racing will be phased out by 30 June 2029.
A responsible and planned rehoming program is essential to the future welfare of greyhounds that may retire from racing over the coming years.
Greyhounds are known for their gentle nature and make wonderful companion animals. Before being rehomed, greyhounds will undergo behavioural and health assessments to help ensure they are ready for family life.
The rehoming process will be managed through recognised organisations, including Tasracing's Greyhounds as Pets program, RSPCA Tasmania and Dogs' Homes of Tasmania.
At this stage, we are simply seeking expressions of interest. Registering does not commit you to adopting a greyhound and does not guarantee that a dog will be available.
If you would like to learn more or register, email: greyhoundtransition@racingintegrity.tas.gov.au and include your contact details.
Your interest will help support the Commissioner's work on developing a transition plan that ensures retired racing greyhounds continue to receive the care and homes they deserve.
